What to Expect When You Hire J. Scott Marketing

Hiring a digital marketing agency is a big step. If this is your first time working with one, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what happens next. How long does onboarding take? Who does what? What will you be responsible for?

At J. Scott Marketing, we believe clarity builds trust. Marketing shouldn’t feel confusing or mysterious, and you shouldn’t be left guessing about how your partnership works. That’s why we’ve built an onboarding process that’s structured, thoughtful, and designed to make things easy—especially for first-time clients.

Here’s exactly what to expect when you hire us as your digital marketing agency.

Why does onboarding matter?

The way a digital marketing partnership starts sets the tone for everything that follows.

A strong onboarding process creates alignment, reduces stress, and ensures we’re working toward the same goals from day one. It allows us to understand your business deeply, communicate clearly, and move forward with confidence.

Most importantly, it helps you feel supported. You should never feel like you’re “handing things off and hoping for the best.” You should understand what’s happening, why it’s happening, and how our partnership is getting you closer to your business goals.

That’s what our onboarding process is designed to do.

How long does onboarding take?

Most clients are fully onboarded within two weeks. In some cases, when timing is critical, we’ve completed onboarding in as little as two days. Regardless of the timeline, the process itself remains thorough and intentional.

We are highly organized and use the Asana project management system to manage every detail. Our onboarding includes 27 distinct tasks spread across our team, all completed before your digital marketing project officially launches.

These tasks include:

  • Reviewing your goals, audience, and competitive landscape
  • Getting up to speed on your brand via a Brand Questionnaire (that you complete)
  • Preparing a detailed launch agenda
  • Setting your business up in our internal systems
  • Coordinating internally so nothing falls through the cracks

Our founder, Julia Scott, even adds the primary client contact’s phone number directly to her cell phone—because communication matters, and no call should ever be missed.

By the time we sit down for your launch meeting, the groundwork is already done.

What’s happening behind the scenes?

We take care of everything we responsibly can so your time and attention are freed up for the many, many other hats you wear in your business.

That includes:

  • Project setup and internal coordination
  • Strategy development and planning
  • Tool configuration and tracking setup
  • Preparing documentation and timelines
  • Creating a clear, structured launch agenda

Our goal is simple: when you arrive at the launch meeting, everything should feel organized and easy to follow—not overwhelming. The launch meeting agenda should be a reflection of the signed contract, with the timeline and scope of work clearly laid out. We don’t like surprises here! However, if anything has changed since you signed your contract, the launch meeting is a good time to share it if you haven’t already.

As a new client, what do I need to do?

There are a few areas where client participation is essential, primarily when it comes to access and ownership.

Depending on your project, we may need access to:

  • Google Analytics
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool
  • Your website backend
  • Social media accounts
  • Advertising platforms
  • Email tool

If a new tool needs to be created, we ask that you set it up in your own name and then grant us access. This approach protects you for the long term. Too often, businesses lose access to their own websites or social media accounts because a previous marketing partner disappeared. By keeping ownership in your hands, we ensure your brand and business always remain under your control.

For most tasks we ask you to complete, we provide:

  • Step-by-step written instructions
  • Short video tutorials
  • Live support if needed

How much time does onboarding take for me and my team?

Yes, the first month is typically the most hands-on for clients—but that upfront effort creates clarity, efficiency, and a smoother workflow for the rest of the partnership.

As your business, brand voice, and visual identity become second nature to us, our partnership requires fewer meetings and less of your bandwidth–and that’s a good thing!

Who does what? Let’s break it down.

We believe roles should be clearly defined. Here’s how responsibilities are typically shared:

  1. Scott Marketing is responsible for:
  • Strategy and planning
  • Campaign setup and execution
  • Content creation and optimization
  • Scheduling and/or publishing content
  • Tracking, reporting, and analysis
  • Ongoing management and improvements

The client team is responsible for:

  • Providing access to existing tools
  • Reviewing strategy and creative ahead of our joint meetings
  • Sharing insights about the business and customers, including feedback on the quality of leads our partnership is generating
  • Participating in launch and regular marketing meetings

This division of responsibilities ensures accountability on both sides—and better results overall. We also find it saves you and your team a lot of time and mental focus, so you can devote your working hours to what you and your team do best.

What if I have questions?

If you’ve never worked with a digital marketing agency before, you’re not alone. Many of our clients come to us with questions—and we welcome that.

One of our core values at J. Scott Marketing is Plain English.

That means:

  • No unnecessary jargon
  • No vague explanations
  • No talking over your head

We explain what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how it impacts your business—in language that actually makes sense. Questions are always welcome, and answering all your questions is part of our process. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions–the bad ones and the good ones.

Digital marketing shouldn’t feel like a black box. You deserve transparency and understanding.

Why is your onboarding process so detailed?

Our onboarding process isn’t complicated—it’s disciplined. And yes, detailed.

By investing time and care at the beginning, we:

  • Reduce confusion later
  • Prevent avoidable mistakes
  • Build trust early
  • Create clear expectations
  • Enable faster, more effective execution

This structure allows us to focus on what matters most: generating leads and sales for your business.
